💶TippingA tip is expected in Washington, D.C. — service is not included in the price, so add roughly 18-20% at restaurants and bars on top of what's on the menu

Good to know

  • United States uses Type A & B sockets — recognisable by the small central pin — at 120V / 60Hz.
  • European Type C plugs (two round pins) fit Swiss sockets just fine, but Type E/F "Schuko" plugs are too wide and won’t go in — a simple plug adapter is all you need, not a voltage converter. Travellers from the UK (Type G) and North America (Types A/B, 120V) will need an adapter too, and North American visitors should also check their devices are dual-voltage (100–240V).
  • Emergency services: dial 911 anywhere in United States, or 144 for an ambulance, 117 for police and 118 for the fire brigade. Heading into the mountains? Save 1414 for Rega, the Swiss air rescue service.
