Things to do at the White House and President's Park
There is no walk-up option for touring the White House: a public tour must be requested through a Member of Congress, or through your embassy if you are a foreign national, submitted roughly 21 to 90 days ahead, and tours run only on select mornings Tuesday through Saturday, excluding federal holidays.
Visitors who show up expecting same-day access are turned away at the fence line. The reliable fallback is the White House Visitor Center a block away on Pennsylvania Avenue, which is free, requires no reservation, and is open daily.
It covers the building's history and famous residents through exhibits and a short film, so you leave with real context even without a booked slot inside.
